The MD5 algorithm is a widely used hash function producing a 128-bit hash value. Although MD5 was initially designed to be used as a cryptographic hash function, it has been found to suffer from extensive vulnerabilities. It can still be used as a checksum to verify data integrity, but only against unintentional corruption.
Like most hash functions, MD5 is neither encryption nor encoding. It can be cracked by brute-force attack and suffers from extensive vulnerabilities as detailed in the security section below.
MD5 was designed by Ronald Rivest in 1991 to replace an earlier hash function MD4. The source code in RFC 1321 contains a "by attribution" RSA license. The abbreviation "MD" stands for "Message Digest."
The security of the MD5 has been severely compromised, with its weaknesses having been exploited in the field, most infamously by the Flame malware in 2012. The CMU Software Engineering Institute considers MD5 essentially "cryptographically broken and unsuitable for further use". Despite this known vulnerability, MD5 remains in use.
MD5 is one in a series of message digest algorithms designed by Professor Ronald Rivest of MIT (Rivest, 1992). When analytic work indicated that MD5's predecessor MD4 was likely to be insecure, Rivest designed MD5 in 1991 as a secure replacement. (Hans Dobbertin did indeed later find weaknesses in MD4.)
In 1993, Den Boer and Bosselaers gave an early, although limited, result of finding a "pseudo-collision" of the MD5 compression function; that is, two different initialization vectors that produce an identical digest.
In 1996, Dobbertin announced a collision of the compression function of MD5 (Dobbertin, 1996). While this was not an attack on the full MD5 hash function, it was close enough for cryptographers to recommend switching to a replacement, such as SHA-1 or RIPEMD-160.
The size of the hash value (128 bits) is small enough to contemplate a birthday attack. MD5CRK was a distributed project started in March 2004 with the aim of demonstrating that MD5 is practically insecure by finding a collision using a birthday attack.
MD5CRK ended shortly after 17 August 2004, when collisions for the full MD5 were announced by Xiaoyun Wang, Dengguo Feng, Xuejia Lai, and Hongbo Yu. Their analytical attack was reported to take only one hour on an IBM p690 cluster.
On 1 March 2005, Arjen Lenstra, Xiaoyun Wang, and Benne de Weger demonstrated construction of two X.509 certificates with different public keys and the same MD5 hash value, a demonstrably practical collision. The construction included private keys for both public keys. A few days later, Vlastimil Klima described an improved algorithm, able to construct MD5 collisions in a few hours on a single notebook computer. On 18 March 2006, Klima published an algorithm that could find a collision within one minute on a single notebook computer, using a method he calls tunneling.
Various MD5-related RFC errata have been published. In 2009, the United States Cyber Command used an MD5 hash value of their mission statement as a part of their official emblem.
On 24 December 2010, Tao Xie and Dengguo Feng announced the first published single-block (512-bit) MD5 collision. (Previous collision discoveries had relied on multi-block attacks.) For "security reasons", Xie and Feng did not disclose the new attack method. They issued a challenge to the cryptographic community, offering a US$10,000 reward to the first finder of a different 64-byte collision before 1 January 2013. Marc Stevens responded to the challenge and published colliding single-block messages as well as the construction algorithm and sources.
In 2011 an informational RFC 6151 was approved to update the security considerations in MD5 and HMAC-MD5.

How you compare the results afterwards is up to you; you can convert the byte array to base64 for example, or compare the bytes directly. (Just be aware that arrays don't override Equals. Using base64 is simpler to get right, but slightly less efficient if you're really only interested in comparing the hashes.)

But what about 32-bit applications that have the system path hard coded and is running in a 64-bit Windows? How can they find the new SysWOW64 folder without changes in the program code, you might think. The answer is that the emulator redirects calls to System32 folder to the SysWOW64 folder transparently so even if the folder is hard coded to the System32 folder (like C:\Windows\System32), the emulator will make sure that the SysWOW64 folder is used instead. So same source code, that uses the System32 folder, can be compiled to both 32-bit and 64-bit program code without any changes.
Try copying calc.exe to somewhere else... then run the same tools again. You'll get the same results as Java. Something about the Windows file system is giving different data to the tools than it's giving to Java... I'm sure it's something to do with it being in the Windows directory, and thus probably handled "differently".
You can't. The whole point of a hash is that it's one way only. This means that if someone manages to get the list of MD5 hashes, they still can't get your password. (Not that MD5 is as secure as it might be, but never mind.) Additionally it means that even if someone uses the same password on multiple sites (yes, we all know we shouldn't, but...) administrators of site A won't be able to use the user's password on site B.
Even if you could, you shouldn't email them their password - that's sensitive information which might remain sensitive.
Instead, create a tool for resetting the password based on a timestamped hash value that can only be used once. Email a url to them which includes that timestamped hash value and at that URL let them change their password. Additionally, if you can, make that timestamped hash expire after a short period (e.g. 24 hours) so that even if they don't change the password (because they don't log in), there's a reduced vulnerability window.
Many systems generate a new, random password and email that to them, forcing them to change it on first login. This is not desirable because someone could change every password in your system by brute-forcing the password reset form.
Technically, it's 'possible', but under very strict conditions (rainbow tables, brute forcing based on the very small possibility that a user's password is in that hash database).

You don't want to 'reverse' an MD5 hash. Using the methods outlined below, you'll never need to. 'Reversing' MD5 is actually considered malicious - a few websites offer the ability to 'crack' and bruteforce MD5 hashes - but all they are are massive databases containing dictionary words, previously submitted passwords and other words. There is a very small chance that it will have the MD5 hash you need reversed. And if you've salted the MD5 hash - this won't work either! :)

Again I strongly question your use of MD5. You should be at least using SHA1. Some people think that as long as you're not using MD5 for 'cryptographic' purposes, you're fine. But stuff has a tendency to end up being broader in scope than you initially expect, and your casual vulnerability analysis may prove completely flawed. It's best to just get in the habit of using the right algorithm out of the gate. It's just typing a different bunch of letters is all. It's not that hard.

Basically CryptoJS is a growing collection of standard and secure cryptographic algorithms implemented in JavaScript using best practices and patterns. They are fast, and they have a consistent and simple interface.

While selecting library it's also important to see if it supports modern frameworks such as Bower, passes jslint, supports plugin model for JQuery or module systems such as AMD/RequireJS in addition to being in active development and have more than 1 contributors. Break the file into 128-byte chunks and feed them to MD5 consecutively using update().
This takes advantage of the fact that MD5 has 128-byte digest blocks. Basically, when MD5 digest()s the file, this is exactly what it is doing.
If you make sure you free the memory on each iteration (i.e. not read the entire file to memory), this shall take no more than 128 bytes of memory.

@endNeither. You should use bcrypt. The hashes you mention are all optimized to be quick and easy on hardware, and so cracking them share the same qualities. If you have no other choice, at least be sure to use a long salt and re-hash multiple times.
PHP 5.5 offers new functions for password hashing. This is the recommend approach for password storage in modern web applications.

Figures are in megabytes per second, for a "long" message (this is what you get for messages longer than 8 kB). This is with sphlib, a library of hash function implementations in C (and Java). All implementations are from the same author (me) and were made with comparable efforts at optimizations; thus the speed differences can be considered as really intrinsic to the functions.
As a point of comparison, consider that a recent hard disk will run at about 100 MB/s, and anything over USB will top below 60 MB/s. Even though SHA-256 appears "slow" here, it is fast enough for most purposes.
Note that OpenSSL includes a 32-bit implementation of SHA-512 which is quite faster than my code (but not as fast as the 64-bit SHA-512), because the OpenSSL implementation is in assembly and uses SSE2 registers, something which cannot be done in plain C. SHA-512 is the only function among those four which benefits from a SSE2 implementation.
